While the back-to-school shopping sales tax holidays season is upon us, and I’m about to list the jurisdictions granting such gifts, it’s important to remember that these sales tax holidays are probably not going to be the panacea, the proverbial shot in the arm, that the retail industry needs to demonstrate any sort of real recovery.
While helpful, they are what they are – doses of children’s chewable aspirin to treat the symptoms but not the root cause of the Recession. They may lessen the pain for shoppers and retailers for a while, but the underlying festering problem won’t have been healed so quickly.
That said, here’s our line-up of rather generous sales tax holiday gifts, as follows:
Alabama: August 7 – 9 for clothing up to $100, books up to $30, school supplies up to $50, computers up to $750
Connecticut: August 16 – 22 for clothing and footwear up to $300
District of Columbia: August 1 – 9 for clothing and school supplies up to $100 [UPDATE: REPEALED AS OF AUGUST 3, 2009]
