The nonpartisan Tax Foundation recently released its updated report on state and local sales tax rates. (Fiscal Fact No. 196, October 2009, found here), opening eloquently, “Sales taxes are paradoxically transparent and non-transparent. A taxpayer can easily see how high the tax is by looking at the receipt for any purchase. It’s hard to imagine a more transparent tax. However, due to the wide variety of local option sales taxes among municipalities, a taxpayer can be puzzled by the many different tax rates his receipts show in various parts of the state.”
What a clean statement in support of the sales tax automation model, particularly one that operates within the cloud, no? :- )
According to the study, the highest combined state and local sales tax rates are found in California, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Washington State, while four localities in central Alabama have the nation’s highest combined sales tax (namely Brookwood, Coaling, Coker, and Vance all came in at 11%).
